Abanindranath Tagore, Kolkata
Abanindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta in 1871. During the 1880s, he studied under Olinto Gilhardi and Charles Palmer. Pursuing his increasing interest in Japanese painting, he trained under Yokoyama Taikan who tutored him on Japanese brushwork. In 1907, Abanindranath Tagore established the Indian School of Oriental Art and founded The Bengal School that was responsible for pioneering the Bengal Revivalist movement. The ideals of the Bengal School rejected the artistic styles of the West in favour of the traditions of India, Japan and China. Abanindranath Tagore's early works blended Rajput and Pahari miniature traditions with his training in European Painting and his Western Academic ideas of portraiture and water colour landscape. He believed in sustaining 'the breath of freedom' in any artistic endeavour. This freedom was manifest in his later works.

Ashoke Mullick, Kolkata
Ashoke Mullick (b.1957) Ashok Mullick is thought of as one of the leading painters of the Bengal School of Art. His paintings include a strong focus on the ordinary person ? more specifically womankind , and the contradictions it faces. The artist likes to portray the contemporary age where people have lost the human touch and have become increasingly impersonal in their behaviour. As a painter, he touches on these facets where customs are not being followed and the link between now and the past is getting hazy.

Bijan Choudhury, Kolkata
Bijan Choudhury (b. 1931) Bijan Choudhury has worked on the imagery of Bengali poetry as it has evolved since its earliest days to the present, covering almost more than four centuries of poetical development. His paintings have narrative elements but are in no way illustrative. He is here both as a composer and interpreter. His archetypal imagery and symbolism are not explicit as in the recent Indian variety of Surrealism and fantastic art. He has always avoided the sensational and the fearful aspects of art. He has searched for significant visual forms that have behind them the range and scope of Human Art since the earliest cave dwelling days.
Binode Behari Mukherji, Kolkata
One of the pioneers of Indian Modern Art, he was the student of Nandalal Bose in the early days of Kala Bhavana. A painter and a muralist Binode Behari’s work ranges from murals to collage, from wood-cuts to calligraphy. For him art is basically a principle of making and doing and its process is more important rather the end-object. He suffered from ill health and poor vision from his childhood, and a later phase of life when he completely lost his sight, a different kind of essence came into his creative world. The eminent film maker Satyajit Roy made a remarkable documentary film “The Inner Eye” on Binode Behari – which is a rare experience to see the artist at work. A professor emeritus of Visva Bharati, Binode Behari Mukherjee was awarded Deshikottama by Viswa Bharati, Sanmtiniketan.

Jamini Roy, Kolkata
Jamini Roy was born in 1887 in a village of the Bankura district in West Bengal, an area known for its rich folk art tradition. In 1903, with the consent of his father, he came to Calcutta and enrolled at the Government School of Art. Here he learnt the academic methods then in vogue in the West, and achieved his fame as a portrait painter in the European tradition. Despite his instant success, he had, by 1925, begun experimenting along the lines of popular bazaar paintings sold outside the Kalighat temple, Calcutta. By the early 1930s, he made a complete switch to indigenous materials, following the Kalighat idiom back to its source in the scroll paintings of the Bengal countryside. Roy's work won popularity during the 1940s and his clientele included both the Bengali middle class and European community. In 1946, his work was exhibited in London and in 1953 in New York. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1955. He died in Calcutta in 1972.

Whenever he got a chance he would strap his painting gear to his bicycle and drive out to the surrounding countryside of Indore to paint the landscape. In 1937, he reached Mumbai determined to become an artist, with a hole in his pocket and dream in his heart. Initially, Husain apprenticed himself to a painter of cinema hoardings and painted these hoardings with dexterity. Husain was noticed for the first time in 1947 when he won an award at the annual exhibition of the Bombay Art Society. Subsequently he was invited by Souza to join the Progressive Artists Group.
